SHILLONG, Feb 11: The All India Trinamool Congress slammed the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government for “robbing” the people of the state out of opportunities by indulging in nepotism and corrupt practices.
“In the last four years, people have been deprived of all the opportunities that are confined to a few only,” state AITC leader Mukul Sangma said on Friday.
The former chief minister claimed they had created a lot of opportunities during their tenure but they have not percolated down to the grassroots after the National People’s Party-led coalition took over.
“It is not that there are no opportunities. But these have been hijacked by a few people who, through nepotism and corrupt practices, have deprived others and captured everything,” he said.
“This is what is happening and this is what is creating a sense of frustration as there is no hope. You will have hope when you have an opportunity,” Sangma said.
The AITC had earlier questioned the government for turning a blind eye to illegal coal mining and transportation and irregularities in the power sector. It also accused the government of helping some people get rich through the illegal coal trade.
The party had also asked the government to scrap the departments of Transport and Mining and Geology for their inefficiency in checking the rampant illegalities.
Sangma had claimed illegal coal continues to be mined and transported on a massive scale with the state government in no mood to take action.
