‘Women need to use the laws available’

JOWAI: The Project Director, Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association (MCSWA), Dr. JN Chullai speaking as the main speaker during the celebration of the International Women’s Day (IWD) at H.K. Singh School, Jowai said that there are laws to protect rights of women in place but women are yet to make the best use of them.

Lamenting on the slow progress of trial in many rape cases in the district, Dr Shullai said that even cases which were referred to the fast track court and the honourable court is yet to deliver its verdict in spite of prolonging the verdict for many years.

This includes rape cases which involves minor victims, Dr Shullai also said that there should be some organization to help the victims and their family to ensure that justice is delivered and as of now there is no support system for the victim and their families, she said.

At a function organized to celebrate the International Women’s Day, organized by Seng Kynthei Unitarian Church, Jowai (Women Wings of the Church), Dr. Shullai whose organization was involved in working with destitute women, call upon the Women of the Unitarian Church to come out of the four corner of the church and take up women issues to protect the rights of women folk in the region. Dr Shullai called upon the Women of the Church to be pro-active as there are many areas which involve protection of women rights that needs to be addressed.
