SHILLONG, March 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has reiterated its demand seeking exemption of Meghalaya from the purview of the Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
Singed in 1950, it is a bilateral treaty between Nepal and India establishing a close strategic relationship between the two South Asian neighbours, allowing free movement of people and goods between the two nations, and a close relationship and collaboration on matters of defence and foreign policy.
KSU president, Lambok Marngar, on Sunday claimed that apart from KSU, even the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has expressed concern on the implementation of this treaty in the North East.
Alleging that the treaty has resulted in influx in Meghalaya, he said that the Union has been reminding the Centre to exempt Meghalaya from the purview of the Indo-Nepal treaty.
Informing that the Union will pursue the matter with the Centre, he also asked the state government to revisit the treaty.
