SHILLONG, March 8: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem raised public-centric issues including that of water logging on important stretches of the Umiam-Jorabat four-lane expressway while moving a zero-hour notice in the Assembly on Tuesday.
Syiem said waterlogging has become a major problem in Nongpoh and Umling, particularly during monsoon season.
The local MLA informed the House that the contractor assigned to construct drainages should be asked to undertake the work properly.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister, in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong said that drainage improvement work has been completed in several areas of Nongpoh, but work in some areas could not be carried out.
Tynsong pointed out that this stumbling block had come up due to existing utility issues, while adding that the National Highways Authority of India had already taken up the matter with the Ri-Bhoi district administration
Earlier, during the Question Hour, Prestone Tynsong had informed the House that the preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) for the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road is in the final stage. Replying to a query raised by Congress MLA from Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the draft DPR has been submitted to the World Bank and approval and work commencement is awaited.
The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 83.98 crore.
