SHILLONG, March 11: All India Trinamool Congress leader, Mukul M. Sangma on Friday advised the state government not to be complacent in the peace parleys with the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council.
He reminded the government of new outfits, including the Garo National Liberation Army surfaced even after a tripartite agreement was signed with the Achik National Volunteer Council in 2004.
“Other militant outfits emerged after the suspension of operations in the Garo Hills following the agreement with the ANVC,” Sangma said, replying to a question on whether the surrendering of the HNLC members would mark the end of the insurgency in the state.
He said the situation was complex and there was no room for complacency. “We cannot say there is no reason to worry (after the peace process),” he added.
Sangma said those at the helm of affairs should generate hope for the youth so that they can realise their dreams and not be lured by forces to wage a war against the nation.
He hoped the HNLC’s offer for unconditional talks would pave the way for lasting peace in the state. “It is probably a positive gesture,” he said, pointing out that the appointment of an interlocutor would convey the Centre’s seriousness about resolving the issue.
But he advised caution while taking the peace parleys with the HNLC forward and said it was important to enable an ecosystem where trust prevails. “The government has a tendency to create troubles,” he said.
