SHILLONG: The Opposition members on Thursday rued the fact that there is acute shortage of medicines in the State Government- run hospitals.
HSPDP MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit raised the matter during Question Hour and said that there is non-availability of medicines in the hospitals of the State.
UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh also concurred with Basaiawmoit and said that medicines worth Rs 2 have re available at the Shillong Civil Hospital.
Responding to the queries, Health and family Welfare Minister, AL Hek, said that the department will look into all the points which have been brought to his notice.
UDP leader Donkupar Roy mentioned that even expiry medicines were supplied to the patients, to which the Minister said that he was not aware of such incident, even though he assured that the department was taking corrective measures for any lapse.
Meanwhile, Opposition MLAs also expressed concern that doctors and nurses were not willing to go to rural areas due to poor infrastructure.
James Marak (NPP) alleged that the CT Scan Unit in Tura Civil Hospital has been non-functional for many days, to which Hek said that the matter would be verified.
Earlier, reacting to a question by legislator Jemino Mawthoh (UDP) on whether the present health facilities were satisfactory to cater to the poor and needy, the Minister said that the Government run PHCs and Sub Centres are working continuously to provide medical facilities to the rural poor.
Hek also said that free transportation and ambulance is being provided to pregnant women, besides which, the State Government has come up with the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS).
