SHILLONG, March 17: The Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) on Thursday added two sophisticated machines into its collection — a litter-picking machine and a truck-mounted road-sweeping machine — which are expected to reduce manual handling of garbage by the municipal workers.

Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar released the two machines on the premises of the SMB on Thursday.
The SMB has procured the litter-picking machine from Green Assets for the purpose of mechanised picking of litter and garbage, especially from open dumps.
The collection capacity of this machine is 1.5 cubic metres, which will be roughly about a tonne of garbage.
The machine cost Rs 41.2 lakh, and was acquired with funds from the 14th Finance Commission Award.
On the other hand, the truck-mounted road-sweeping machine’s collection capacity is 1.4 cubic meters (roughly about a tonne of garbage).
It contains a centre brushing sweeping system, two side brushing sweeping systems, and a main broom with a sweeping width of 2,000 mm.
This machine was procured with funds from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the North Eastern Region Urban Development Programme, at a cost of Rs 24.49 lakh.
