SHILLONG, March 20: These 20 days of unusually high-temperature March this year surely packed a surprise for Shillong and its adjoining areas but after days of soaring mercury, some rainfall is now likely in the coming week, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Reacting to a query, a scientist of IMD, Upper Shillong, Rakesh Kumar, admitted that the temperature is above normal in Shillong. The maximum temperature is four to five degrees higher than normal in March this year, he said.
For some days, Shillong has been witnessing temperatures between 24 and 25 degrees, but on Sunday, the maximum temperature was 26.2 degrees.
Rakesh Kumar said that there is no major weather system impact on the North East in March, which is why clear sky prevailed leading to an increase in temperatures.
“However, in the coming week some rainfall is expected, temperature is likely to fall and some respite from heat is expected,” he added.
As per IMD forecast, the temperature in Shillong will continue to hover around 24-26 degrees till March 23 and the sky above Shillong will be clear.
However, starting March 24, the temperature is expected to reduce slightly and the city may also witness few spells of rain.
