SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) has asked the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, AT Mondal to immediately recognize the Opposition bench and appoint the Leader of Opposition at the earliest.

Addressing a press conference here, senior NPP leader, Conrad K Sangma said that the Speaker must recognize the Opposition bench and appoint the Leader of Opposition so as to ensure better functioning of the legislature-wing.

The NPP leader also reminded that in the year 1999 – 2000 when a Government was formed with 9 NCP MLAs, the Speaker now and then MLA, AT Mondal was the 10th member to support that government and the then Speaker (L) EK Mawlong gave recognition to the Opposition and appointed L. Sangma as its Leader.

While stating that precedent was already set, he said the rules are very clear. “The Speaker may change the rules and may interpret the rules in the manner that he desires,” Sangma said.
