SHILLONG: The Sur Bathiang Bird Sanctuary, which aimed to preserve birds various species from extinction at Mawtari Myrdon Elaka, Ri-Bhoi was inaugurated by Governor RS Mooshahary on Saturday.
The gathering was attended by the people of the Elaka including the Sordar, Rangbah Shnong and the school Children.
Addressing the gathering, Mooshahary lauded the Sur Bathiang Community Reserve Society for the effort and vision to preserve and conserve the environment while stating that man must have the message to maintain peaceful society, peaceful environment and the peaceful life.
He also congratulated the society for having a vision to motivate the largest section of people on the important to conserve nature. “Birds are part of our nature and their presence makes the environment a beautiful scenario”, he added.
“Meghalaya possessed high percentage of forest covered area and the custom being followed to maintain the secret grooves and the protected forest is also a good practice. Flora and fauna, bird of various species and animal lived in this forest peacefully without any harm”, the governor said adding that the objective of the Sur Bathiang Community Reserve Society to protect and conserve natural resources is highly commendable.
He also encouraged the gathering to rear pigs, cattle and poultry to meet with our daily requirement. He called upon the gathering to do away with the killing of birds and animal, but to give them place for shelter.
Later, Mooshahary announced his contribution of Rs 1 lakh to the society with a wish that the society will success in the future while also hoping that the inspiration to work for the environment and the people will be messages to the general populace of the state as a whole.
Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, Local MLA of Umsning while speaking on the occasion appreciated the founding members of the society for their effort to create awareness to the people with comprehensive approach.
