SHILLONG: Taking note of the revenue leakages in several departments, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that the State Government is contemplating a strong surveillance system to keep a tab on the anomalies that have had a huge impact on the fiscal health of the State.
Pointing out that it is difficult to regularize everything from the Secretariat, Dr Sangma said the use of proper technology would vastly improve the monitoring levels. The Chief Minister hinted at improved web presence of departments, whereby every stage involved in a transaction can be monitored online, so as to minimize the loss of revenue.
Admitting that leakage of revenue is a matter of grave concern and needs to be addressed in the right earnest, Dr Sangma said that the MUA II Government would streamline the various revenue generating departments by putting in place a strong monitoring system.
When asked about the taxation, mining and transportation departments which are the front ranking revenue earning wings of the government, he said that it is very important that all these departments perform to their optimum level while adding that the present government will go all out to check this pilferage.
Notably, there have been repeated reports of revenue leakage but little has been done so far to address this problem. The taxation department is often accused of not discharging its duties efficiently and crores of rupees are lost due to this.
The mining and geology department too has been found wanting on several counts when it comes to loss of revenue even as the same case applies to the transport department.
It may be mentioned that despite the overwhelming number of vehicles flooding the toll gates across the State, tax collection, reportedly though, has not been up to the mark over the years.
