SHILLONG, March 26: The All India Congress Committee does not seem to be in a hurry to take any further action against five party MLAs who were suspended for supporting the National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
State Congress president, Vincent H Pala on Saturday said the party has not had a meeting so far to decide on the matter. The party is expected to take a call after the budget session of Parliament is over, he said.
The five Congress MLAs were earlier issued a show-cause notice by the party for supporting the MDA government but none of them has responded to date.
The five are Ampareen Lyngdoh, Mohendro Rapsang, Mayralborn Syiem, PT Sawkmie and Kimfa Marbaniang.
It has been speculated that the five may leave Congress sooner or later to join other political parties.
One of them said on the condition of anonymity that he would not reply to the show-cause notice while hinting at wearing a different party colour.
The Congress, which has ruled Meghalaya the longest, was reduced to five MLAs after 12 others led by former Chief Minister Mukul M. Sangma quit and joined the All India Trinamool Congress. The party received another blow when the five aligned with the MDA.
But the party has claimed it still enjoys the support of the people of the state and has begun identifying fresh faces for the 2023 Assembly elections.
