SHILLONG: In a move that could help the growth of sport in the state, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that the State Government will explore the possibility of encouraging sports associations and federations in Meghalaya to set up sports academies and institutes to nurture budding athletic talent.
“The Government would provide the necessary financial support to the associations and federations in setting up of these academies and institutes,” Dr Sangma said while speaking to reporters recently.
“Personally, I feel that it would be better for the associations and federations other than the Government to run these kinds of institutes.”
He added that one posi-tive is that various associa-tions and federations have former players from a variety of sports disciplines as their members.
“The former players would be able to provide vital suggestions in setting up and running of these sports academies and institutes,” the Chief Minister said.
According to him, the Government will also seek the support of the various sports associations in the spotting and tapping of young talent across Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, he said that the Government is contemplating the idea of appointing more coaches in various sports disciplines.
“We would want to conduct special training on a regular basis in various parts of the State with the appointment of more coaches,” Chief Minister said.
He added that conducting regular training programmes will also help in identifying young sports talent who can bring laurels to the State.
To recognise the achievement of sports persons, Dr Sangma said that the Government will provide scholarships for sportspersons who excel at National and State Level.
“Special coaching programmes for talented youth in disciplines like football, table tennis, badminton, archery and contact sports will be carried out,” he said.
