SHILLONG, April 3: Titosstarwell Chyne, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC, has lauded the stand of the National People’s Party to respect the agreement of letting the United Democratic Party lead the council’s Executive Committee (EC).
“From the beginning, both the parties were committed to ensuring stability in the council. The UDP wants to reassure that it remains committed to the United Democratic Alliance,” Chyne said here on Sunday.
He said the NPP had stuck with the alliance even when the former EC led by Teinwell Dkhar had collapsed.
“In the past two years, there were no differences between the two parties.
I feel the NPP is happy with the way the UDP is leading the EC in the council,” Chyne said.
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had reassured that the NPP will not disturb the present agreement in the KHADC by staking claim to lead the new EC.
“I have been making it very clear that the party will stick to its commitment. We have agreed that the CEM in the KHADC will be from the UDP. This will continue even if we have 15-16 MDCs in the council,” he said, adding that the party will not ditch its alliance partners.
“We remain committed to the agreement finalised in 2019,” Tynsong, who is the vice-president of NPP, said.
The number of NPP MDCs increased to 12 in the past few months after two Congress MDCs – Bajop Pyngrope and Fantin Lakadong – Macdalyne S. Mawlong of the PDF and independent Teibor Pathaw crossed over.
Earlier, NPP Parliamentary Party secretary in the KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem had stated the party’s position in the council will be strengthened with the joining of the four MDCs.
“But we will continue to respect the agreement made during the formation of the UDA,” he had said.
The KHADC has 30 MDCs. Apart from the NPP’s 12, the UDP has seven including nominated MDC Bindo Mathew Lanong and HSPDP has two. The Congress has six MDCs while the remaining three (Lambor Malngiang, Latiplang Kharkongor and Batskhem Ryntathiang) are independent.
