MAWKYRWAT, April 5: After conducting an inspection, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District unit has unearthed construction of four ‘illegal’ coke factories in Nongjri and Kulang villages under Ranikor Civil Subdivision going on in full swing.
Following this discovery, the KSU, on Tuesday, met South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, C Kharkongor, demanding of the district administration to immediately stop the construction of the coke factories in Nongjri and Kulang villages, failing which, the union would take action.
Speaking to media persons, KSU SWKHD unit president, Forwardman Nongrem, said, “Today, we came to seek clarification from the DC regarding the illegal construction of the coke factories at Nongjri and Nongkulang.”
According to him, the DC is unaware about the construction of the aforementioned coke factories as none have so far approached her for permission.
“Now we have understood that the people or company have bypassed not only the district administration but also failed to pay heed to the local people who protest against setting up of coke factories,” said Nongrem.
The KSU leader claimed that such factories will not help the general public, adding that it will instead affect the health of the locals and cause harm to the environment including Kynshi river in Ranikor.
