NONGPOH: Concerned over the recent rape and murder of a girl at 12th Mile area of Ri-Bhoi district the KSU, northern border area (NBA) has demanded the Dr Mukul Sangma-led MUA-II government to take steps in order to check influx in the State.

While condemning the recent rape and murder of the girl whose body was dumped at 12th Mile area, the KSU said continued influx is complicating the situation.

Alleging that unabated inflow of Bangladeshi migrants is taking place through the Jarabad-Sonapur route to 8 Mile in Jaintia Hills, the KSU, NBA said there are no infiltration check gates along the route to restrict the entry of the foreigners.

The Union members also detained around 24 suspected Bangladeshi migrants from Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi on Monday evening. The migrants, travelling in two tourist Tata Sumo vehicles, were on their way to Lad

Rymbai in Jaintia Hills.

The vehicles (ML 10-A-4069 and other unregistered) were driven by Mansur Ali and Islam Alim.

KSU, NBA assistant secretary Edward Kshiar said that the union members acted on a tip off to apprehend the suspected Bangladeshis.

“After detaining the labourers headed for Jaintia Hills, the union members asked them to produce valid documents to prove that they are Indian citizens but none of them had any document,” Kshiar said adding that suspected Bangladeshis were later handed over to the police team of the Infiltration Check Gate at Byrnihat.

Kshiar also informed that, during the course of investigation, the two tourist sumo drivers revealed commercial vehicles use the Jorabad-Sonapur to 8 Miles route to transport Bangladeshis in Jaintia Hills taking advantage of the lack of infiltration check gates in the area.
