SHILLONG: The State Home department has come under the scanner for appointing the rape accused police official SN Roy as Quarter Master, Reserve Police.

Roy and a few others were allegedly involved in the gang-rape of a Class XII student at a city hotel in March 2011.

However, the girl died in February last under mysterious circumstances with reports saying that girl died in a fire accident while she was cooking food at her house.

After committing the crime, Roy had absconded to Bihar after taking unauthorized sick leave. Later, he surrendered before the Court of the Judicial Magistrate in July 2011.

In a letter addressed to Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) president Agnes Kharshiing said it is strange that “Roy who was involved in the rape of a minor has been reinstated and quietly posted as Quarter Master.

“This is an insult by the authorities who slyly re-appointed him though he was suspended,” Kharshiing said.

According to Kharshiing, the Home department has promoted Roy to the post of Quarter Master, who is in charge of all stores, at a time when the victim mysteriously died of burns and the relatives of the girl suddenly disappeared.

“The matter should have been thoroughly investigated by the police,” she added.

“A policeman accused in a rape case securing a better post with the blessings of the protectors of the law is an insult to the victim and the society at large which has been crying for justice and punishment for such heinous crimes,” Kharshiing said.

She asked the Home Minister to remove Roy immediately and to entrust the case to the fast track court on a day-to-day basis so that “such men do not embarrass the police force”.
