SHILLONG, May 2: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday stressed the need to reduce the mistrust between the police and society.
Speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of the 1st Meghalaya Police Battalion at Mawiong, he recalled the services rendered by the retired and active police personnel of the battalion.
“It is because of the service rendered by them that the police overcame many challenges,” Rymbui said, acknowledging that policing is difficult.
The police are living in glass houses and people are trying to judge them, he added.
Rymbui underscored the need for CCTVs in police stations and videography at the crime scenes in keeping with a Supreme Court mandate.
“The police are for society and every society needs policing but there is some trust issue between the two somewhere,” he said.
Happy that the police are “alive to the dynamics of investigation”, Rymbui attributed the improvement in the law-and-order situation to the endeavours of the police and the push for peace by the people.
He said the police have been able to track the culprits in most criminal cases, adding that the ongoing talks between the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council and the government would usher in long-lasting peace in Meghalaya.
He also said the government will try to support the infrastructure requirement of the police.
Earlier, the commandant of the Battalion, Claudia Lyngwa said the police have a stressful job but are committed to handling law-and-order issues 24X7 for the safety and security of the citizens.
