SHILLONG, May 12: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has constituted an Elaka committee to work on the modalities of obtaining the opinion of all stakeholders to ensure that the existing practice of excluding women’s participation from affairs of the Dorbar Shnong may be altered by consensus.
During the hearing of the writ petition filed by Aneeta Synrem on Thursday, the KHADC sought further time from the court to facilitate the discussions and arrive at an appropriate decision.
The case pertains to the right of women to seek election and also to participate in the election process for choosing headpersons under the Dorbar Shnong.
The two-judge bench of Chief Justice, Sanjib Banerjee and Judge, W Diengdoh accepted the KHADC’s appeal and granted 1o weeks’ time to the Council to complete the modalities.
The matter will be heard again on July 28.
