SHILLONG, May 17: A portion of the bridge at the Mawlai bypass on Tuesday morning caved in due to downpour, forcing the authorities to stop vehicular movement from both sides.
The Public Works department has, meanwhile, initiated the repair work on the bridge.
A senior official at the PWD has informed that the department will take around 36 hours to repair the bridge.
The blacktopping will be extracted and filled with boulders along the portion of the bridge that has caved in, added the official. Earlier, members of the Mawlai Congress visited the site and questioned the government over the shoddy construction of the bridge, which has sustained damage within three years of its inauguration.
