SHILLONG, May 20: Chief Minister and NPP national president, Conrad K Sangma on Friday said the party will initiate disciplinary action against one or two legislators who may have been in talks with other parties for a possible defection.
“We are very much intact. But there are one or two MLAs against whom we have started disciplinary action. I cannot say why since the disciplinary committee is taking action against them,” he said.
Party officials confirmed to The Shillong Times that one of the NPP MLAs against whom disciplinary action is being initiated is Benedic R Marak, who represents the Raksamgre constituency. There was no clarity on the name of the other MLA(s).
The NPP’s move to initiate disciplinary action against its legislator comes at a time when All India Trinamool Congress leader, Mukul Sangma has stated that some NPP MLAs are looking for greener pastures and are burdened with anti-incumbency factor.
To a query on whether all the sitting MLAs of the party will be given tickets for the 2023 polls, Sangma said, “There will be an election committee that will work for the tickets. There is a process and that process has to be followed.”
Replying to another query on whether his wife, Mehtab Chandee will be contesting the polls next year, the NPP chief said he had no clue. He was quick to add that it was up to her to decide.
Reacting to the same query, Mehtab said she was involved with the party indirectly but had not decided on taking the electoral plunge.
