TURA: Displeased with the recent appointment of nine sericulture demonstrators by the Directorate of Sericulture & Weaving, Shillong, the A·chik Student Welfare Association (ASWA), A?chikni said that the appointment is a direct violation of the 40% Job Reservation policy for the Garos.

According to the order from the Directorate of Sericulture & Weaving, Shillong, Bakul Ch Hajong, dated March 31, only one among the nine appointed candidates was a Garo candidate.

ASWA said, in the total nine candidates, two were from Khasi-Jaintia, three were Muslims, two were Boro and one Nepali. However, in what can be termed as a disregard for the job reservation for the Garos, only one Garo was appointed.

“This is like snatching the food from someone’s plate and feeding it to another” said the Association and added that the Job Reservation policy states that 40% is reserved for Garos, 40% for Khasi and Jaintia, 15% for general category and 5% for others.

The Association said, from the nine appointed at the least three candidates should have been from the Garo community and questioned whether in all appointments if the 40% job reservation is being followed correctly.

ASWA informed that the Association will soon take up the matter with the concerned authorities and threatened that if no correctional steps are taken, ASWA will embark on various strong agitations throughout Garo Hills in protest of the violation of the 40% job reservation for the Garos.
