GSU apprises WGH DC of ‘issues’
TURA, May 23: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has asked West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe to look into certain issues plaguing Tura. In a memorandum, the GSU accentuated the immediate need for a government-sponsored public transportation facility for the town to provide budget-friendly facilities for the ones in need. According to the Union, the Tura Public Transport Service (TPTS), which was implemented to ease travelling woes of the locals, could not deliver quality services it was designed for. The GSU urged the DC to look into the reimplementation of the TPTS and to revisit problems and failures associated with its implementation earlier. Another issue raised by the Union was the exorbitant prices of meat and fish in Tura. The GSU said that rates of the same are high when compared to Khasi and Jaintia Hills as well as in Assam. The Union said that the trend of overpricing, which started during COVID-19 lockdown, continues unabated till date with no action from the concerned authorities.
Awareness prog under way in NEHU
SHILLONG, May 23: A two-day workshop for the Architecture Department of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) was on Monday inaugurated. According to a statement, the workshop on ‘Innovative Construction Technologies & Thermal Comfort for Affordable Housing’ is being organised by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in partnership with GIZ and Building Material and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC). Prof. LJ Singh of NEHU, while inaugurating the awareness programme, said that it is a one-of-its-kind initiative whereby the students will be introduced to thermal comfort and its necessity in the affordable housing sector.
