4 NGO leaders detained in Tura by police

Tura, May 26: Four NGO leaders were detained by police in Tura after they had ‘seized’ a vehicle carrying a consignment of bidis sand any MRP tag.

The NGO leaders informed the police about their action and intention to handover the vehicle to the Deputy Commissioner tomorrow, the Police from Tura Police station detained them as instructed by the Superintendent of Police (SP).

The NGO leaders who have been detained are:  Pritam Arengh (FKJGP), Sengbath Marak (AYWO), Dalseng Momin (ADE) and Brinbal Sangma (FAF).

When contacted the SP said that he would inform later on the situation.

Members of various NGOs have laid siege to the Tura Police Station demanding release of the detained NGO members. A lot of shouting were going on near the police station at the time of filing of this report.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya police in a statement said that an information was received about some NGO members seizing some items from shops in Rongram market.

Accordingly, the statement said, IC Rongram was deputed to carry out an enquiry and take necessary action. During the enquiry, it was ascertained that seven members of FKJGP, ADE, AYWO and FAF had seized some bidi packets from three shops and issued seizure lists also.

The police said all the seizure lists issued by NGOs were seized and the seven members travelling in two vehicles were detained and brought to Tura Police Station.

Later, about 15-20 NGO members assembled near Tura PS and shouted slogans. They have been removed and a case was being registered against them.
