SHILLONG, May 29: The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) has maintained that the economy of Meghalaya is pitiable with only the lucky ones becoming richer.
State president of Meghalaya LJP, Jamil Ahmed, said that whilst the government continues to fight unemployment, price rise has hit all-time high, with the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer.
“One can easily imagine how poor families are feeding their children. Is it even possible for them to feed their children? The economy of the state is at a pitiable state and few lucky persons in the state are becoming richer. The problems are numerous, but the question is how many of them have been addressed by the present government,” he said
He also said that the recent collapse of the dome of the under-construction Assembly Building at New Shillong Township is just one example of corruption that has come to the fore. “Imagine how many more (of of such cases) could emerge,” he said.
Referring to his recent visit to Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, Ahmed said that no governmental help was provided to the rainfall-hit people.
“I visited the place, took stock of the situation and asked the Rangbah Shnong if any government minister or official tried to find about their well-being but unfortunately no one from the government has bothered to visit and help them. Furthermore, even though the PHE Minister is the MLA of Mawkyrwat, it is the people of Mawkyrwat who face water supply issues. In this regard, the party has written a letter to Chief Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, explaining the situation I have witnessed and requested the government to help those residents whose houses were damaged by the storm. The action on our letter is yet to be known,” Ahmed said.
