SHILLONG: Prof. Parvin Sinclair, Director, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi has urged the State Government to utilize online certificate programmes on teaching of science and promised to help Meghalaya in providing adequate number of science and maths kits for the elementary and the secondary levels.
Prof. Sinclair,who was on a three-day visit to North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), Shillong, recently met Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, Deputy Chief Ministers, Rowell Lyngdoh, and Prof R C Laloo, at Chief Minister’s office chamber.
The meeting discussed ways and means of improving the quality of school education in the State.
The issue of retaining teachers in rural areas also came up for discussion.
The Chief Minister suggested that provisions for internship in rural areas for a longer duration be made for students in the forthcoming B.Ed. programme to be launched by NERIE for the students of the region. The Chief Minister sought the cooperation of NCERT in improving the quality of teaching- learning of Science and Mathematics at elementary and secondary level.
The Director, NCERT asked the Government to make use of online certificate programmes on teaching science.
It was also decided to strengthen the EduSat networks, a satellite based interactive networks dedicated to educational related matters, in the state. Issues of vocational education were also discussed at length and Prof. Sinclair promised the State in devising plans for vocational education.
Prof. Sinclair also met P P Shrivastava, Member, North Eastern Council in his office chamber. They discussed issues of mutual concerns in regard to projects for revamping science and mathematics education in Northeast.
