Bandh against killing of innocent villager cripples life

 Guwahati: Life came to a halt on Tuesday in eastern Assam districts of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh of Assam in view of bandh call given by a tribal students organization in protest against killing of an innocent member of the community Poona Moran by a joint team police and the Army during an operation against outlawed ULFA militants in which two ULFA ultras and a policeman were also killed on April 19 last.

The innocent person was killed when forces fired upon the house where the ULFA militants were taking shelter.

The forces also set fire to the house with the inmates inside it.

The incident occurred at Kardoiguri village under Baghjan Police Station in Tinsukia district.

The slain militants were identified as Raktajit Asom alias Raktajit Hazarika and Nilim Asom alias Kula Moran while killed Assam Police commando was identified as Lohit Sonowal.

The action by the security forces triggered sharp public outcry in the area with mobs of people armed with sharp weapons came out on the road and launched attacked on vehicles of police and Army personnel making the latter to make hasty retreat.

The killed innocent villager Poona Moran let behind his two minor children- Ripmi (6) and Abhinav (4) besides his widow.

Calling for 36-hour statewide bandh from Wednesday in protest against the killing All Assam Moran Students Union (AAMSU) along with various other organisations representing Moran community warned the government that this should be the last such dastardly killing of innocent persons in the name of counter-insurgency operations.

The bandh crippled life in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts where all financial institutions, education institutions, business establishments remained closed including public transport system.
