Guwahati: Various offices and assets of controversy riddled Kolkata-based Sharada Group, a chit-fund company with investments in media, realty and other sectors, were sealed by the police in different parts of Assam since Monday.

While the police had to lock the offices in some places after aggrieved employees and investors went on a rampage, in other cases it acted on basis of complaints filed by the house-owners of the rented premises.

Police locked the gates of a biscuit factory of the company at Dhubri in western Assam Tuesday after employees of the factory gathered at the premise and staged a demonstration.

The office of Sharada Group at Lal Ganesh area of Guwahati was also sealed by the police Tuesday after agents and investors started protests there.

The Bongaigaon office of the group and two more offices in Guwahati were sealed and assets seized by the police Monday.

A number of police complaints have been registered in the state against the group by its employees and other associates against the alleged fraud and non-payment of salaries and other dues.

The two newspapers of the group published from Guwahati, ‘Sakalbela’ and ‘Seven Sisters’ Post’, have also ceased publication since last month.

Sharada Group’s CMD Sudipto Sen has a ‘look out’ notice on him, issued by the West Bengal police, after fraud cases against his chit-fund company were lodged.

Several media houses owned by the group in West Bengal have also been shut down, rendering nearly 1000 media men jobless in eastern India. (UNI)
