SHILLONG, June 13: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited which has been mired by a series of anomalies ranging from gross mismanagement to financial irregularities is finally going to make some course correction, if the word of the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL Employees’ Associations and Union (CCORMAU) is anything to go by.
The association on Monday said Power Minister Prestone Tynsong is in sync with their demand of allotting more projects to MeECL, and the authorities have initiated steps to regularise the contractual workers while moving towards revoking the ban on recruitment. A firm commitment on providing terminal benefits to the employees has also been made.

Talking about terminal benefits, he said, “Around Rs 840 crore is pending with the government since 2010 which is supposed to be given to MeECL.”
“Terminal benefits was a major issue for us…we are thankful that he has given a firm assurance and we hope we won’t face any problem when it comes to terminal benefits,” a member, who attended the meeting, said.
On regularisation of contractual employees, the CCORMAU president said around 40% of the employees were working on contractual basis.
“There are around 1,700 contractual workers which is roughly around 40% of the total strength of MeECL. We must accept the fact that without these employees it won’t be possible to run the organisation,” he added.
On the state’s power potential, Shulet said, “We have put forth a request to the government to consider awarding more projects to MeECL. The potential of the state is more than 3000 MW but hardly about 10-15 percent of that has been harnessed.”
He pointed out that the minister has assured to take steps to revoke the order banning recruitment in MeECL.
Shulet also welcomed the appointment of a full-fledged CMD of MeECL.
