SHILLONG, June 14: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday said crime against women and children has not spiked in the state but the growing consciousness among the citizens to report such cases is a good sign.
“It is not that the cases are on the rise but people are reporting each and every case to the authority. I hope this will help solve or arrest the problem and the culprits,” he said.
The newly-appointed Director-General of Police (DGP), Lajja Ram Bishnoi had recently said insurgency in the state has waned but crimes against women and children have been a cause of concern. He said a strategy to prevent such crimes will be put in place after a review of the overall situation.
“Crime against women and children is a cause of concern in the sense that many cases involve people known (to the victims) and family members. This is very disappointing,” Rymbui said.
He said a time-bound investigation is needed to quickly bring to book people who commit such crimes.
Rymbui said the community as a whole should join hands to ensure that even a “small” case against women and children does not go unreported so that the law can take its own course.
“We have to re-educate ourselves to protect the rights of our women and children,” he added.
