SHILLONG, July 9: Prof. Nirmal Kr Sarkar, a noted Meghalaya-based educator, passed away here on Friday following a brief illness. He was 77.
According to a statement, Sarkar, who joined Shillong College in 1969 as English lecturer and retired in 2005 as vice principal, was also involved in many academic, social and cultural organisations.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Retired College Teachers’ Association (MRCTA) has condoled the demise of Sarkar.
“He was a very popular and student-friendly teacher, and was also involved with many academic, social and cultural organisations during his service career and even after retirement till his death. He was always forthcoming with all sorts of help to his students especially those belonging to weaker sections, and also filling discussions with his friends and colleagues with humour and memorable stories. He maintained a very dignified retired life and remained active through social activities,” the Association said in a statement. It may be mentioned that Sarkar is also one of the founding members of MRCTA.
Conveying condolence to the bereaved family, the Association added, “His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, admired him and loved him.”
