SHILLONG, July 14: After days of incessant rainfall, the mercury in Shillong has started to soar, with temperatures hovering over 25 degree Celsius since past few days.
While on July 10, the maximum temperature recorded in Shillong was 25.5 degree Celsius, on July 11 and 12, the same stood at 26.1 degree Celsius.
Similarly, while on July 13, the maximum temperature recorded here was 27 degree Celsius, the same recorded on Thursday was 28.3 degree Celsius.
Meanwhile, Rakesh Sharma, a scientist at IMD Shillong, has attributed the scorching weather to low pressure in Bay of Bengal area.
“Due to the low pressure in Bay of Bengal area, moisture is not coming to the North East. Hence, Shillong along with the rest of the country is witnessing quite humid conditions,” he said.
He, however, said that the low pressure is expected to weaken in Bay of Bengal next week, following which the region may witness some amount of precipitation between July 18 and 19.
It is pertinent to note that the hottest July Shillong has ever witnessed was on July 9, 2005, with a temperature of 29.7 degree Celsius.
