SHILLONG: It was a sorry sight to see a woman participating in the hunger strike called by the qualified but unemployed Grade IV candidates along with her eight-month-old child.
The woman, Mary Macdalyne Nongrang, a resident of Mawlai Mawiong, was forced to carry her infant child with her as she joined hundreds of her colleagues to protest for their rights on Tuesday.
Speaking to a group of journalist on Tuesday, Nongrang said that it was really sad that they were being forced to go to the street to seek for jobs despite having been declared qualified by the District Selection Commission.
Informing that her husband was working as a daily labourer, she said that there was no one at home to look after her child.
“I have come to participate in the indefinite hunger strike since my conscience does not permit me to sit at home while my fellow members are fighting for their rights,” she said.
Nongrang also said that she was not the only women who had left their children at home to participate in the hunger strike.
According to her, the Government would be doing grave injustice to all the qualified candidates if they do not get the appointment.
She also added that that the job would help her to secure her family’s financial needs.
“This job would give me and my family financial security. My three children would have a secured future if I manage to get this job,” she said.
