NONGPOH, July 19: Community participation and work at grassroots for elimination of tuberculosis (TB) in Ri-Bhoi by 2025 were endorsed during a sensitisation programme for members of the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS), National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), self-help groups (SHGs), et al.
Organised by the Office of the District Tuberculosis Officer, Ri Bhoi, in convergence with the National Rural Livelihood Mission, the programme discussed stigma associated with TB, constraints faced by women in accessing healthcare facilities, preventive measures against TB, among others.
District TB Officer Dr E Kalwing, during the programme, informed that whilst sensitisation of members will help in the identification of presumptive TB cases among members, their family and villages, capacity building of the SHGs about tuberculosis will facilitate coordination with health workers and community health staff to improve action. “It will also cater to increasing access to healthcare and develop a sustainable approach in the community which creates a better impact in achieving accessible and equitable healthcare,” Kalwing said.
As part of the sensitisation programme, a pledge was also taken to fight in unison against TB.
