SHILLONG: Taking due note of the fact that several private universities with ‘unknown or doubtful credentials’ coming to the State and luring the students with spot admission facilities, the East Khasi Hills district administration has vowed to take action against such institutes.

Speaking to newsmen here, Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said, “The district administration will take action against those institutes who try to dodge or cheat students.”

He admitted that the administration is concerned over the sudden rise in the number of private institutes who come to the State with spot admission facilities.

Most of these universities send representatives to the State to carry out spot admission for the students.

Making it clear that the district administration would allow institutes to go ahead with on the spot admission only if they have genuine and valid documents, the Deputy Commissioner also sought the cooperation of students and parents to trace down the fake universities who come to the State.

“If they (parents or students) have any doubts about the credentials of the institute they should immediately bring it to our notice,” he said.

The district administration has already directed all institutes from outside the State to seek prior approval from the district administration with all relevant documents before conducting any spot admissions in future.

According to Goyal, the district administration is trying its best to screen such institutes even as he supported the idea of ‘genuine’ education festivals as it provides greater opportunities to the students to select the institutes for their higher education. However, he made it clear that the category of institutes which participate in such festivals must be scrutinized and verified.

It may be mentioned that over the past few years Edufests are being organized in the State for the benefit of students aspiring to study abroad or within the country.

The Khasi Students’ Union has already voiced its concern over the holding of such educational festivals where dubious institutes participate and on most occasions students are duped.

Earlier on Saturday, the Deputy Commissioner had halted the spot admission process of one Asian Institute of Nursing Education at Hotel Polo Towers after the institute failed to produce any document of approval or affiliation from any University.
