SHILLONG, Aug 5: As concern continues to grow over price rise in the state, the government has made it clear that the issue has already been taken with the Centre and the respective deputy commissioners have been directed to reactivate the district-level price-monitoring committees.
Stating that this subject needs state and Centre-focussed deliberations, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, “We have done it already and not only Meghalaya other states have also taken it up with the central government.”
Defending the government, he said that the state machinery should not be blamed alone. Centre is working on the issue, he said.
Earlier the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) had suggested the government to activate the state and district-level price monitoring committee.
Asked to comment on goods trucks taking a detour to reach Shillong in view of the condition of the Umiam bridge that is said to add to the inflationary trend, Tynsong said, “From government side we have put restriction on carrying capacity and the state PWD has also engaged consultant for an alternative bridge. This is for the permanent solution.”
“The consultants are on the job. Survey will take place soon and once they submit the DPR, we will push for sanction of this particular project,” he added, while stating that an alternative bridge will be constructed downstream of the existing bridge.
