Guwahati: A week after the first Assamese scaled the world’s highest mountain peak, another fellow Assamese youth today reached the Mount Everest.

Manish Deka of Guwahati, an avid mountaineer, on Friday scaled the highest peak this morning, his family said here.

His first attempt to reach the top last week had failed due to inclement weather, but he succeeded in his endeavour at the second go.

His family said Deka was scheduled to reach the tip on Saturday but good progress in the journey ensured that he reached it earlier.

Earlier, Tarun Saikia, also of Guwahati, had become the first Assamese to scale the highest mountain peak on May 18 last.

Deka and Saikia are part of the first North East Indian Mt. Everest expedition.

The Programme was sponsored by the North Eastern Council and the Manipur Government and the team was formally flagged off by President Pranab Mukherjee on February 25 last. (UNI)
