JOWAI: The bad road condition of the National Highway 44 in East Jaintia Hills District has not only created inconvenience to commuters but has also put their life in high risk.

The long stretch of the NH-44 from Khiehriat till Malidor that links Barak Valley and other North-eastern States including Tripura and Mizoram has been in a bad shape after the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) decided to take over the road from the State PWD.

Public vehicles and commercial vehicles plying on the road mange to reach their destination with consistent delay as many of them break down on the middle of the road thereby obstructing the smooth flow of others vehicles.

Recently, immediately after the Joint Dorbar Shnong of over 10 villages under Narpuh Elaka called for a road blockade in protest against the State government’s failure to repair the road, the PWD has started filling up the pot holes with boulders and mud.

Due to heavy downpour in the last few days, the mud and sand have been washed away and the remains of boulders have created a setting for disrupted vehicular movements.

Concerned over the bad road condition, JYF President, EJH, Niwasly Rymbai said, “The PWD has not properly maintained the road in Jaintia Hills particularly in East Jaintia Hills District. Areas like Ladrymbai Khliehriat and all along the NH-44 has no proper drainage system. Absence of drainage system is one of the reasons for the bad road condition”, the JYF leader said.

The MUPF said, “The road condition is a symbols of irresponsibility on the part of the PWD which has embarrassed the government”, MUPF president, D Laloo said.
