SHILLONG, Sep 4: Shillong-based noted singer and composer Gwyneth Alicia Mawlong on Saturday released her debut Extended Play Record (EP) Am I.
The EP, which was released by social activist Rev Kyrsoibor Pyrtuh at an event in Lawsohtun in the presence of Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, will be available on Spotify.
The EP has total number of seven tracks — Am I, My Generation (Shillong Late 80s), Gentle Breeze, Boys Don’t Cry (For Brandon), Adrienne, Crossroads and Letter to Us.
“This is my first music EP ever. The compilation is a synthesis of lyric and music based on my personal encounters, experiences and stories that people have shared with me through the years,” Mawlong said. She also said that as an exponent of western music, she has always felt the need to share her music with the world ever since she started writing poetry and songs.
Mawlong also informed that she recorded her demo tracks about 20 years ago with various recording studios around Shillong.
“It was in the year 2019 that I finally made up my mind to work on my debut EP when I had stepped into Ribor’s recording studio, Merhliham Arrangements. However, the project got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.
Talking about the title track, Mawlong said she had written the song after encountering a person who came out from a rehabilitation centre.
“The person uses these lines while interacting with me ‘I am clean now and am I you are looking for’. The song is also based on my own personal trauma which I had gone through when I was a child and a young adult,” Mawlong said.
She also said the songs in the EP are all based on her personal trials and tribulations during her mid-20s.
Mawlong also informed that she is currently working on her debut music trilogy/album.
