Three dead in road mishap in Jaintia Hills

JOWAI: Three people including a woman died after the night bus in which they were travelling went off the road and fell into a gorge at Lad Jalyiah near Mookhep, 2 km before reaching Ladrymbai, in East Jaintia Hills District at around 2 am on Saturday morning.

The three people killed in the mishap were identified as Furun Nessa (39) of Patharkandi, Assam, Pradip Debnath (32) of Dharmanagar, North Tripura and Mringanka Sharma (23) of Dokhalasutrapara, Kamrup, Assam.

The injured have been identified as Jogesh Boro (32), Md. Islam Uddin (43), Karim Nur Nata (60), Md. Khalek Saifulla (27) and Md. Moklesvar Rahman (40).

The driver of the bus fled from the scene immediately after the accident.

Police informed that two passengers including the woman died on the spot while the third succumbed to his injuries at Khliehriat CHC.

“About five of them were reportedly injured and they were released from the Khliehriat Community Health Centre after treatment,” police said.

According to police, the night bus belonging to Jagannath Travels (Regd. No ML05G-8711) was bound for Dharmanagar in Tripura from Guwahati.

Police suspected that over speeding might have led to the accident.
