Debate evaluates social media

SHILLONG, Sep 20: As part of the centenary celebrations of Laban Bengalee Boys Higher Secondary School, the 17th Inter-School Debate Competition was organised here on Tuesday, which was won by St. Edmund’s Higher Secondary School.
The topic in the opinion of the house was ‘Social Media Makes a Person Socially Inactive’.
Debraj Purkayastha Chyrmang of St. Edmund’s Higher Secondary School won the Champions Trophy while Arti Muskat of Laban Bengalee Girls Higher Secondary School bagged the Runners Up Trophy.
The debate spoke at length on various negative and positive aspects of social media, its implications and impact, and provided the viewers with a larger prospect of the topic.
All together nine schools participated in the debate competition.
The centenary celebrations kick-started on September 13 this year and it is a year-long programme; the celebration will conclude on Sept 13 next year, the principal of LBBHSS, Dr R Bhattacharjee, said.
According to her, different events will be held throughout the year such as inter-school Quiz and science exhibition, and sporting and cultural events.
LBBHSS, one of the oldest educational institutes in Shillong, has crossed yet another milestone as the school celebrates its centenary year amidst excitement and cultural fervour. “Hundred years is a long way and it leads us to ponder from where we started as a cradle of just 45 students. We have come this far where we are catering to the need of the society,” said vice principal J Goswami, while expressing her gratitude and optimism about unwavering endeavours in future as well.
An ex-student and vice principal vocational, Debashish Charkrabarty, said, “I feel proud to be a part and parcel of the school. The previous headmasters, teachers and staffs have played a very important role to bring the institution to an iconic level now”.
Yet another former student, and a teacher, Debashish (Junior), said, “Since its inception, the school has a prominent place. We have been doing well and we hope our teaching staff and students will continue to serve and achieve”.
