Police still clueless on rape accused Islam

SHILLONG: The accused in the Ampati twin rape case, Sub Inspector Narul Islam is still at large with the police not being able to make any breakthrough into the case, since his dramatic escape from a police quarter recently.

The accused, who managed to flee from the police quarter after he was detained for committing the heinous crime, is still absconding and no information on his whereabouts have been received till date.

“We have already sent three teams to Shillong, Guwahati and the residences of the accused at Dhubri and Goalpara districts of Assam but till date, we have not been able to track him,” South West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police R Muthu said.

Muthu also informed that family members and relatives of the accused have denied seeing him or maintaining any kind of communication with him ever since the incident.

“We have enquired and questioned the relatives of Islam but last year, submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs for creation of new police stations and upgradation of existing police outposts in the State.

Dr Sangma informed that the State Government has already received the intimation of the Central Government which indicated that the Centre was willing to support the initiative if the State Government could confirm taking up responsibility of all recurrent expenditures after five years.

The Union Home Secretary, while speaking to reporters, said that he has taken note of the perspective of the State Government which he would discuss with the Central higher-ups once he returns to the national capital.
