State Govt to replace all police outposts in State

SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to enforce major revamp in the State Police organization by doing away with all police outposts in the State and creating two categories on police stations.

While the first category of police stations, consisting of 80 personnel, would come up in district capitals and other sensitive areas, the other category of police stations with a strength of 40 personnel would replace all police outposts in the State.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma made the announcement following his meeting with Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami here on Tuesday which was also attended by Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Chief Secretary WMS Pariat and senior State government officials.

Lack of manpower in different police stations and outposts in the State remained the focal point of discussion at Tuesday’s meeting.

Discussions were also held on the overall law and order scenario in Meghalaya.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, the Chief Minister informed that the Government has pressed upon the Centre to support the State in strengthening its police organization.

The Chief Minister also admitted that the State has not been able to invest in strengthening the police organization.

“Police stations in Meghalaya do not have requisite manpower and they have become redundant,” Dr Sangma told reporters, while adding that the State Government, last year, submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs for creation of new police stations and upgradation of existing police outposts in the State.

Dr Sangma informed that the State Government has already received the intimation of the Central Government which indicated that the Centre was willing to support the initiative if the State Government could confirm taking up responsibility of all recurrent expenditures after five years.

The Union Home Secretary, while speaking to reporters, said that he has taken note of the perspective of the State Government which he would discuss with the Central higher-ups once he returns to the national capital.
