SHILLONG, Oct 21: The Merghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday lashed out at the National People’s Party (NPP) for allegedly indulging in corruption and illegal activities.
The TMC said that the NPP, true to its symbol, has written a book on corruption with several chapters on how to milk various government departments.
“In terms of achievement of the government and the Chief Minister, I would like to give credit to the NPP for coming out with an entire book on corruption,” TMC Chief Whip George B Lyngdoh said.
He said the NPP has written chapter after chapter on how to deny people their rights, rob them of employment and corrupt each and every department.
He said it was expected of Rajya Sabha member and NPP state president WR Kharlukhi to blow the government’s trumpet and attack the Opposition to divert attention from its failures.
“He would not have been the state president of his party or an MP if he listened to the people and not talked good about the government,” Lyngdoh said.
He likened Kharlukhi to Roman emperor Nero playing the fiddle when Rome was burning.
Facing relentless attacks from the TMC over allegations of scams and irregularities, the NPP had dared the party to file an FIR or go to the court or the Lokayukta with evidence.
Lyngdoh said going to court would convey that the government does not listen to the people anymore and needs the Judiciary to bring it on track.
He pointed out that the NPP-led government has ignored the High Court, too, not heeding its orders.
“As a responsible opposition, it is important for us to raise issues and to ensure people know about the responsibilities our party is fulfilling,” he said, adding that nothing can be expected from a government that is indifferent to the people and the Judiciary.
