               BEFORE                                         AFTER

SJ IMPACT: Comparisons of the before and after pictures of a footpath near Meghalaya Co-operative Apex Bank in Police Bazar. The bushes growing next to the pavement, which were earlier protruding, thereby making it difficult for pedestrians to walk, are now trimmed and the people are seen in the picture on the right walking on the now-spacious footpath. Lights, lights, lights…
Diwali’s fervour seems to have taken over the entire town and it is no secret that festivities are filled to the brim, spilling over from Durga Puja to now the festival of lights.
Take a brisk walk in any part of the city right now, and you’ll find a well-decorated locality,
Lights are perhaps made the best use of during Diwali. From buildings and cottages to stores and even malls, most of the establishments are sporting hues of different colours, all to remind you what time of year it is.
After two back-to-back years of lull in the merrymaking, people are in an exuberant mood — children and youths can be found strewn across the city roads and streets bursting their crackers, members of different communities clad in their special attires, and since it’s a gifting season too, sweets galore for all celebrating Diwali. There’s so much more to it, one could go on and on…
Recently, it was noticed that there is awareness in a section of the people about the pollution aspect, though there is no regulation or restriction on bursting firecrackers.
It only goes to say that some Shillongites are aware and sensitive to the risks associated with the phenomenon.
This Diwali, as we enjoy in the festivities, why not ensure one another’s safety and welfare too.
