SHILLONG, Nov 2: Seeking resolution for the issue of traffic jams in Shillong, the UDP on Wednesday petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, asking him to implement odd-even formula for vehicles.
In a letter addressed to the CM, UDP Shillong general secretary Allantry Franklin Dkhar stated that the issue of ever-growing traffic jams across the city is turning out to be a major hurdle for city-dwellers. As such, Franklin proposed an odd-even system to regulate city’s vehicles, which is already employed in the Northastern city of Aizawl, he mentioned.
“It is my humble suggestion that if we implement this system which is currently being operational in the capital town of Mizoram, Aizawl, this problem that we are facing, can be suitably addressed. For example, on Mondays, only private vehicles with numbers ending in 0 and 1, Tuesdays 2 and 3, Wednesday 4 and 5, Thursdays 6 and 7, Fridays 8 and 9 should be allowed ,whereas the weekends could be open to all,” he said.
He however mentioned that the augmentation of public transportation services to cater to the demand that will arise thereof, should be first addressed before implementation of the said system.
