NONGSTOIN, Nov 3: A MGNREGA road project from Noapara village to Balwa Wari waterfalls, reportedly carried out by the Assam government, was on Thursday stalled after stiff opposition from the locals.
According to sources, the road construction was carried out by the Assam Government with the help of Assam Police and supporters.
Irked by the development, villagers of Noapara village bordering Assam on Thursday protested the move.
After receiving information, Meghalaya Police from Langpih AD Camp rushed to the spot only to find the road-cutting work under way at Noapara village. The same was, however, stopped with the intervention of Boko Circle Officer Dibas Bordoloi.
Protesters from Meghalaya and Assam were initially not willing to come to terms with the assurance from police. However, the arrival of senior officials from both the states and a subsequent meeting pulled the temporary plug on the commotion.
The engineers also arrived on the spot with the officials to answer the queries of Noapara residents.
During the meeting, it was decided that the public should hold a meeting to decide on the future of the construction work, and report the decision to the deputy commissioners concerned.
The matter was solved amicably and it was decided that a meeting will be convened by the Dorbar of Noapara village along with the cooperation from both Meghalaya and Assam supporters, in the presence of police and civil officials of both states.
