SHILLONG: The 108 Emergency Service Ambulances will soon be centrally monitored with the introduction of Automatic Vehicle Location Tracking (AVLT) devices.

The AVLT device will help in determining the geographic location and exact position of the ambulances on the map using the GPS. Still in the initial stage, twenty of the 108 Emergency Service Ambulance have the AVLT device fitted to the vehicle to check for feasibility in East Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi, West Garo Hills etc.

At present the only function of the device is to track and locate the ambulance but in the near future the device will enable the field staff to submit Patient Care report (PCR) form and biometric attendance.

It was learnt that the main problem faced for the smooth functioning of the device is the network coverage which is a hurdle in some parts of the State. Once the issue is solve, the AVLT device will be fitted in a phase-wise manner in all the 42 ambulances.
