SHILLONG, Dec 2: The state government is examining the demand for creation of Sohra district, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma informed on Thursday.
“We have to look into many demands of different districts and different blocks and different subdivisions. One of the very important criteria is that there has to be some sense of agreement while moving forward and also to ensure that complications are not there,” Conrad said when asked if the state government is going ahead with the creation of the Sohra district.
He also mentioned that the Mairang district was successfully created after reaching a consensus.
“We found that in certain other demands for subdivisions or blocks or districts, there were certain areas where the overall consensus could not be built up because there were some differences among villages, which led to complications,” the chief minister said.
Informing that the government is trying to engage with the people to ensure that there is no complication, Conrad assured that the process to create Sohra district is on.
Earlier, there were indications that Sohra, the oldest sub-division established in 1982, might be upgraded into a district before Christmas.
Conrad had earlier assured the delegation of Sohra District Demand Forum (SDDF) that the state government would entrust Chief Secretary DP Wahlang to examine the issue.
