SHILLONG: VV Giri National Labour Institute Expert, Dr Onkar Sharma has pointed out that the Central Government needs to take action against coal mines that are guilty of flouting labour rules and regulations.
Addressing a press conference after the two day orientation programme, Dr Onkar Sharma said that the Central Government has to initiate action against any mines that flouts labour norms and employs child labourers.
While child labour is a burning issue confronting the State, Dr Onkar Sharma on Wednesday stated that the child labour law in the country does not put 100 percent prohibition on child labour even as he asserted that the law provides for prohibition of 80 occupations.
Reacting to a query on child labor in the State, Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the survey by Tata Institute of Social Sciences had revealed that there 343 child labourers while the survey of the District Administration asserted that there are 222 child labours in the coal mining areas of the State.
The expert was also full of praises for the State labour department as the department has framed 12 schemes for labourers of the State.
The state Government has also collected a cess of Rs 20 crores from the labourers. He also said that the State Government needs to come out with different schemes for different categories of labourers.
